Miles Davis in Concert
Miles Davis died in September 1991. His work as a trumpeter, bandleader and composer is a crucial part of twentieth century music, and he was a dominant force in the world of jazz. In 1988, at the Münchner Klaviersommer, Miles Davis and his group – Kenny Garrett (saxophone), Bobby Irving and Adam Holzman (keyboards), Joe McCreary (guitar), Benjamin Rietveld (bass), Marilyn Mazur (percussion) and Ricky Wellman (drums) – gave a memorable concert performance.

A Tribute to Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton
The two soloists Eddie Daniels (cl) and Gary Burton (vib) played together with their collegues Makoto Ozone(p), Marc Johnson (b) and Martin Richards (dr) this tribute to two great musicians of the thirties and forties. Benny Goodman was probably one of the first border crosser of the century, he played jazz as well as Mozart‘s compositions for clarinet. Eddie Daniels is his worthy successor. Gary Burton as one of the most prolific vibraphone players reminds of Lionel Hampton.

Now in his eighties and still going strong, Lionel Hampton is one of the grand old men of jazz. In this concert, he plays with a line-up of musicians who, like him, helped to make the history of jazz: Junior Mance (piano), Benny Golson (tenor saxophone), Al Grey (trombone), Jimmy Woody (bass), Clark Terry (trumpet), 'Sweets' Edison (trumpet) and Panama Francis (drums). Their foot-stomping swing-era music sets the audience alight.

For performances of In the Mood and Air Mail Special, they play with the St Petersburg State Orchestra, conducted by Alexander Tschernuschenko, to create an exciting big band sound. The programme finishes with Hampton singing Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World.
